How to choose a project ?
--------------------------------
Most of my students ask me this question. I would like to mention
a few "guidelines" :
Evaluate your project for :
1. Innovativeness -- is there something innovative about it ? You
dont have to look for a project to fetch you the Nobel prize, but
your project should not beone that makes people yawn.
2. Depth : Is there soem technical depth or profoundness in it ?
3. Utility value -- is it something which can be useful to
peopel, directly or indirectly ?
4. Feasible : Is it feasible within the time constraints you have
? Does it match the knwoeldeg you ahve gained till now, or can
gain with some marginal effort ? Do you or your institution have
the resources for doing this project ?
Some of you will also go to the industry to do the project. This
is a good thing. It is also a risky thing. Ask yourselves these
questions :
1. Is the concerned industry/enterprise interetsed in helping you
? Most often industries have their own problems and headaches.
They are not too keen to entertain students like you. Or they may
not be geared to accomodate such projects. So evaluate the host
enterprise carefully before choosing one.
2. Is there a "guru" in the host enterprise ? Is he/she someone
who will mentor you ? Is he/she someone who is provably competent
in the area of your project work ? Is he/she willingly doing this
? Or is he/she just obeying orders "from the top" ?
3. The project being proposed to you, is it too specific to the
host enterprise ? Or, does it have a more general scope of
application ?
4. Are there any confidentiality clauses or restrictions ?
5. Is the project based on some propreitary product ?
After you gather the answers to all the above questions, consult
your teachers or superiors or seniors. Thje golden rule is -- do
not rush through the choice. Haste sually amkes waste.
Your project work is an important key for the success of your
career.
Good luck,
partha
